Piskadó Beach

Piskadó Beach

Shelly

One of the most captivating and least-known beaches is Piskadó Beach, a perfect spot for snorkelers, divers, and those seeking an authentic experience.

WHERE IS PISKADÓ BEACH?

Piskadó Beach, also known as Grandi Beach, is located on the northwest coast of Curaçao, in the picturesque village of Westpunt, an area famous for its stunning scenery and crystal-clear waters. Just a 45-minute drive from Willemstad, the island’s capital, Piskadó Beach is an easily accessible destination that will transport you to a more peaceful and natural setting, far from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy beaches.

HOW DO YOU GET TO PISKADÓ BEACH?

Getting to Piskadó Beach is very easy. From Willemstad, follow the main road west toward Sabana Westpunt. The road is well-marked and will take you past stunning coastal views and colorful local villages. Once you reach Westpunt, you’ll find signs that will guide you directly to the beach. There’s also a small, free parking lot right next to the beach, making it even easier to get there.

WHAT FACILITIES DOES PLAYA PISKADÓ OFFER?

Although Piskadó Beach is a small, more rustic beach compared to others on the island, it offers some basic amenities that ensure a pleasant experience. These include:

  • Free parking: As mentioned earlier, there is a small parking lot with no charge, which is appreciated on an island where some places charge for parking.
  • Picnic tables: If you decide to spend the day here, you can bring your own food and enjoy a leisurely lunch overlooking the ocean. The picnic tables provided are perfect for a peaceful meal surrounded by nature.
  • Small local kiosks: Some days, local fishermen sell fresh fish, and every now and then there are food stalls where you can buy a snack.
  • Outdoor showers: If you want to rinse off after a day of snorkeling or scuba diving, you'll find simple outdoor showers.

WHY IS PLAYA PISKADÓ WORTH VISITING?

A paradise for snorkeling and scuba diving

Without a doubt, the main reason why Piskadó Beach is so special is its abundant marine life. It’s common to see sea turtles swimming near the shore here. Thanks to local fishermen who clean their catch on the beach, the turtles are drawn to the scraps and have become regular residents. This makes Piskadó Beach one of the best places to swim with turtles in Curaçao—without having to take an expensive tour! If you’re passionate about diving or snorkeling, be sure to bring your gear. The waters are calm and clear, offering excellent visibility. In addition to turtles, you’ll find tropical fish, stingrays, and coral, making this spot a true underwater paradise.

Local Authenticity

Piskadó Beach retains its authentic Caribbean charm. Here, you won't find large resorts or crowds of visitors. The beach is usually frequented by locals, especially fishermen who return at sunset with their catch of the day. This gives you a closer look at the daily life of the islanders.

A calm and relaxed atmosphere

Unlike other, more popular beaches on Curaçao, Piskadó Beach is ideal for those looking for a more relaxed atmosphere. There’s no loud music or big events, allowing you to completely unwind and enjoy the sound of the ocean and the tropical breeze.

Incredible sunsets

Since Piskadó Beach faces west, it’s one of the best places on Curaçao to enjoy an unforgettable sunset. After a day spent exploring the water, what better way to end it than by watching the sun sink below the Caribbean horizon?

TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT

  • Bring your own snorkeling gear: Although you can sometimes rent gear at the beach, it's best to bring your own to make sure you don't miss the chance to swim with the turtles.
  • Get there early: Although Piskadó Beach isn't usually crowded, if you want to enjoy the beach when it's at its quietest, it's best to arrive early in the morning, when you're most likely to see turtles swimming near the shore.
  • Sun protection: As on any Caribbean beach, the sun can be very strong. Be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and perhaps a hat or a beach umbrella, since natural shade is limited.

Piskadó Beach is a destination that combines nature, authenticity, and unforgettable moments. Whether you’re a snorkeling enthusiast, an experienced diver, or simply looking for a quiet spot to relax, this beach has something special in store for you. Don’t forget your camera, and get ready to create unique memories!

    Kenepa Grandi Beach

    Kenepa Grandi Beach

    Shelly

Among the many spectacular beaches this beautiful island has to offer, there is one that stands out above the rest: Kenepa Grandi Beach. With its white sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and relaxed atmosphere, this little corner of paradise will steal your heart.

Where is Kenepa Grandi Beach located?

Kenepa Grandi Beach, also known as Grote Knip, is located on the northwest coast of Curaçao, about a 40-minute drive from Willemstad, the island’s capital. The beach is located in the Westpunt region, an area known for its breathtaking natural landscapes and peaceful atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of the city.

How do I get to Kenepa Grandi Beach?

Getting to Kenepa Grandi is quite easy if you rent a car, which is recommended for exploring Curaçao at your own pace. From Willemstad, just follow the main road toward Westpunt (the “Weg naar Westpunt” route). Along the way, you’ll see signs guiding you to the area’s beaches, including Kenepa Grandi. The road is in good condition, and while it’s possible to get there by public transportation, renting a car is the most convenient option.

    Amenities at Playa Kenepa Grandi

Kenepa Grandi is a public beach with free admission, but despite its beauty, it retains a simple atmosphere with few commercial facilities, which makes it even more special for those seeking a more natural experience.

    • Free parking: Unlike some beaches that may charge for parking, here you won't have to worry about additional fees.
    • Beach chairs and umbrellas (for a fee): Although the beach is quite rustic, there are beach chairs and umbrellas you can rent for a small fee if you'd rather relax in the shade.
    • Small kiosks: You'll sometimes find local vendors selling snacks and drinks. However, there are no restaurants or large stores nearby, so it's a good idea to bring your own food and drinks if you plan to spend the whole day there.
    • Public restrooms and showers: Although basic, Kenepa Grandi has public restrooms and showers where you can rinse off after swimming in the ocean.
    • Panoramic Lookout: Just before heading down to the beach, there is a lookout that offers a spectacular view of the entire bay. It’s the perfect spot to take photos that capture the tropical charm of the area.

Why is Playa Kenepa Grandi worth visiting?

    1. Crystal-clear waters: The waters at Kenepa Grandi are incredibly clear and a vibrant blue. It’s an ideal spot for swimming, snorkeling, or simply floating in the water while enjoying the scenery. If you love snorkeling, don’t forget to bring your gear—the seabed is teeming with life, with colorful fish swimming close to the shore.
    2. An unspoiled natural setting: Although it is one of Curaçao’s most popular beaches, its relative remoteness and the lack of large resort complexes keep it in an almost unspoiled state. This allows you to enjoy a more peaceful experience, surrounded by nature and away from mass tourism.
    3. The perfect backdrop for photos: Kenepa Grandi is, without a doubt, one of the most photographed beaches on the island. From its iconic lookout point to its rock formations and crystal-clear waters, every angle makes for a perfect postcard.
    4. Unforgettable Sunsets: If you can stay until the afternoon, you'll witness a breathtaking sunset. The colors of the sky and the sea at sunset create a visual spectacle that will leave you speechless.

Tips for Visiting Kenepa Grandi Beach

    • Arrive early: On weekends and holidays, Kenepa Grandi can attract more visitors, so it's a good idea to arrive early to secure a good spot on the beach and avoid the busiest times.
    • Bring everything you need: Since the beach has few amenities, it's a good idea to bring water, food, and sunscreen. A hat or a beach umbrella is also useful if you don't plan to rent one at the beach.
    • Don't forget your snorkeling gear: The calm, crystal-clear waters are perfect for exploring the local marine life.

Curaçao’s New Currency: The Caribbean Florin

Curaçao’s New Currency: The Caribbean Florin

Home 9 Author archive for Shelly ( Page 11 )

On October 10, 2010, Curaçao and Sint Maarten became autonomous countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and formed a monetary union with a shared central bank and a new currency.

The “Regeling Gemeenschappelijk Geldstelsel Curaçao en Sint Maarten,” which governs the currency of the monetary union of Curaçao and Sint Maarten, stipulates that the Caribbean guilder will replace the Netherlands Antillean guilder (NAf.).

Frequently Asked Questions About Curaçao's New Currency

The following questions have been compiled and answered by the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten. For more information, visit the official website: https://www.caribbean-guilder.com/

What is the reason for introducing the Caribbean florin?
On October 10, 2010, Curaçao and Sint Maarten became autonomous countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and formed a monetary union with a shared central bank and a new currency. The “Regeling Gemeenschappelijk Geldstelsel Curaçao en Sint Maarten,” which governs the currency of the Curaçao and Sint Maarten monetary union, stipulates that the Caribbean guilder will replace the Netherlands Antillean guilder (NAf.).

When will the Caribbean florin be officially introduced?
The Caribbean florin will enter circulation on March 31, 2025.

What will the exchange rate be for the Caribbean florin against the U.S. dollar?
Like the Antillean florin, the Caribbean florin will be legally pegged to the U.S. dollar at an exchange rate of 1 USD = 1.79.

What is the exchange rate between the Antillean florin and the Caribbean florin?

The exchange rate between the Netherlands Antillean guilder and the Caribbean guilder is 1:1. The Netherlands Antillean guilder and the Caribbean guilder have the same value.

For how long will the Netherlands Antillean guilder and the Caribbean guilder be in circulation at the same time?
The two currencies will circulate simultaneously for 3 months starting on March 31, 2025.

How long after the introduction of the Caribbean florin will it still be possible to use the Netherlands Antillean florin to make payments?
Cash payments in Dutch Antillean florins will be accepted for up to 3 months after the introduction of the Caribbean florin on March 31, 2025. This means you will be able to make cash payments in Dutch florins until June 30, 2025. You will receive your change (primarily) in Caribbean florins.

Where can I exchange my Antillean florin for Caribbean florin, and for how long?
The exchange can be made at commercial banks where you have an account, up to 12 months after the introduction of the Caribbean florin. This means that March 31, 2026, will be the last day to exchange ANG at commercial banks. However, once those 12 months have passed, you will still be able to exchange Antillean florins at the CBCS for 29 years, until March 31, 2055.

What will the denominations of the Caribbean florin be?
Caribbean florin coins will be issued in the following denominations: 5 florins, 1 florin, 50 cents, 25 cents, 10 cents, 5 cents, and 1 cent. As for banknotes, the denominations will be 200 florins, 100 florins, 50 florins, 20 florins, and 10 florins.

The 250 Caribbean florin bill will be replaced by the 200 Caribbean florin bill, and the 25 Caribbean florin bill by the 20 Caribbean florin bill. The new banknote denominations are more in line with general practices in international payment systems, such as those for the euro and the U.S. dollar.

How will people with visual impairments be able to recognize the different denominations of XCG banknotes?
Caribbean florin banknotes have a number of features that help people who are blind or have visual impairments recognize the different denominations of the bills.

The accessibility features available on our tickets include:

Tactile markings. There are raised lines along the left and right edges of the front side of the bills. You can tell the denomination by the number of lines.

    Large numbers.
The designs feature large numbers to clearly display the denomination. The large numbers are printed in raised ink to make it easy to identify the value of the bills.

    Vibrant colors.
Each bill has a dominant color.

What will be the currency symbol for the Caribbean florin?
The currency symbol for the Caribbean florin will be Cg. For the Netherlands Antillean florin, we use NAf as the currency symbol.

However, the official currency code in the payment system will be XCG. The reason is that the official ISO currency code for more than one country (as is the case with Curaçao and Sint Maarten) always begins with “X.” The official code for the Antillean guilder is ANG.

What will the new Caribbean florin bills be made of?
The banknotes, like those of the Netherlands Antilles, will be made of cotton. However, the cotton will be of higher quality and more durable. As a result, Caribbean florin banknotes will last longer, and fewer banknotes will need to be produced. With reduced production and fewer banknotes destroyed, these sustainable banknotes will contribute to a cleaner environment.

Why is the florín called the “Caribbean” florín?
The name “Caribbean guilder” is stipulated in the “Regeling Gemeenschappelijk Geldstelsel Curaçao en Sint Maarten.” Initially, the name “Dutch Caribbean guilder” was agreed upon. However, since the Dutch Caribbean geographically includes the BES Islands and Aruba, the name “Caribbean guilder” was chosen in these regulations.

What are the advantages of the Caribbean florin?
One of the advantages of the new Caribbean florin is that, thanks to their sophisticated design and high-quality, modern security features, the bills and coins will be protected against counterfeiting, which reduces the likelihood of fraud or loss when using cash.

    Who will supply the XCG?
The coins will be minted and supplied by the Royal Canadian Mint, while the banknotes will be printed and supplied by Crane Currency.

Who holds the copyright to the designs of coins and banknotes?
The Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten is the copyright holder. For information on the terms and conditions for reproducing banknotes, visit the CBCS website.

Curaçao, a historical treasure of the Caribbean

Curaçao, a Caribbean island located north of the Venezuelan coast, has been a strategic point in the history of trade routes and colonial cultures for centuries. Over time, it has accumulated a unique cultural and heritage legacy that distinguishes it from many other Caribbean islands. In this article, we will explore Curaçao's fascinating history, from pre-Columbian times to its modern independence, addressing the influences that have shaped it.

European Discovery: The Arrival of the Spaniards

Curaçao's first encounter with Europeans took place in 1499, when the Spanish explorer Alonso Ojeda Alonso de Ojedaaccompanied by Amerigo Vespuccisighted the island. Although the Spanish initially found little economic interest in Curaçao due to the lack of gold, the island was claimed by the Spanish Crown and became part of its colonial empire. The indigenous Caiquetíos were largely deported to work in the mines of the South American continent.

      The Displacement of Indigenous Peoples

The Caiquetíos, like many other native peoples, suffered from colonization. They were reduced in number and relevance, while the island was largely ignored by European settlers during the first decades after its discovery.

Dutch Interest: The Conquest of 1634

In 1634, Curaçao changed hands when the Netherlands changed Netherlands conquered the island during the height of the Dutch war of independence against Spain. The Dutch West India Company was interested in its excellent location and its natural harbor in the bay of Schottegatwhich would eventually become WillemstadCuraçao is one of the most important commercial centers in the Caribbean. The Dutch established in Curaçao a center for the slave trade, which proved to be fundamental for its economy during the XVII and XVIII centuries.

The Slave Trade: A Dark Part of History

Curaçao, under Dutch rule, became a nefarious center of the transatlantic slave trade. Thousands of Africans were brought to the island to be sold as slaves in other Caribbean and South American colonies. Although slavery was abolished in 1863, the influence of this period left a deep imprint on the island's culture and society.

      The Abolition of Slavery

The end of slavery in 1863 brought significant changes to Curaçao's economy and demographics. The freed population faced numerous challenges, such as lack of resources and opportunities, but over time, the descendants of slaves became an integral part of Curaçao society, shaping its vibrant and diverse culture today.

Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries: Political and Economic Transitions

During the 19th century, Curaçao underwent important political changes. With the end of direct colonial rule, the island began to experience greater autonomy, although it remained part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In the 20th century, the construction of a oil refinery in Willemstad by Royal Dutch Shell boosted Curaçao's economy. The oil industry became one of the island's economic engines, providing employment for many people and attracting immigrants from other parts of the Caribbean and South America.

The port of Willemstad was the target of attacks by German U-boats, underscoring its strategic importance during the conflict. After the war, the island continued to prosper as a reference point for international trade.

The Autonomy and Current Status of Curaçao

In 1954, Curaçao became part of the Netherlands Antilles, an autonomous group of islands within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. However, over time, the island began to seek more independence. Finally, on October 10, 2010, Curaçao became an "autonomous country" within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, along with Aruba and Sint Maarten.

Culture and Tourism in Modern Curaçao

Today, Curaçao is known for its unique blend of African, European and Latin cultural influences, with a multicultural population that speaks Papiamento, Dutch, English and Spanish. The island is famous for its colorful colonial buildings, pristine beaches and vibrant nightlife.

Tourism plays a vital role in Curaçao's economy, attracting visitors from all over the world interested in its natural scenery, fascinating history and rich cultural heritage. Events such as the Curaçao Carnival and the North Sea Jazz Festival are just a few examples of the celebrations that make the island a culturally attractive destination.

Conclusion: An Island with a Rich and Diverse History

Curaçao's history is a reflection of the crossover of cultures, colonization and resilience. From its pre-Columbian origins to its current status as an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the island has witnessed a rich amalgam of influences. With a privileged location in the Caribbean and an unparalleled cultural heritage, Curaçao remains a fascinating destination for historians and travelers alike.
