With which boat should you go to Klein Curacao?

The only way to get to Klein Curacao is by boat. From the main island of Curacao you will find several tour operators offering daily excursions to this small paradise of white sand and turquoise waters.

Most excursions last between 7 and 8 hours in total, as the sailing trip takes approximately 1 hour and 30 to 45 minutes each way.

All the operators who run this tour are licensed, completely safe and reliable. The difference is in what kind of experience you are looking for: comfort, adventure, luxury or speed.

Before booking, be sure to clarify some important points:

  • Are breakfast and lunch included?

  • Does the ship have a bathroom on board?

  • Do you offer drinks during the trip?

  • Are you allowed to bring your own food?

  • Do you have options for people with allergies or special diets?

  • Do you include snorkeling or diving equipment?

  • Is the boat stable in case of swell?

With this in mind, you will be able to choose the perfect tour for you. Here are my recommendations according to your needs:

For an all-inclusive experience with maximum comfort: Mermaid

If you want a complete and carefree experience, my personal recommendation is the all-inclusive Mermaid Boattrips tour.

This operator has its own infrastructure in Klein Curacao, with a shaded area, beach chairs, dining room, buffet, restrooms, showers and even a lookout point ideal for taking spectacular photos.

The Mermaid Boat Trips boat is large and very stable, making it an excellent choice if you get seasick easily. Lunch is plentiful, buffet style, with plenty of provisions for all visitors.

👉 You can book directly via Whatsapp +59995128074 and then pay when boarding.

The best tour to maximize your day: late departure and express arrival in Klein Curaçao: RIB Speedboat

Unlike other tours that leave very early in the morning, this one starts at 09:45 AM from Jan Thiel Beach (Zanzibar Beach & Restaurant), allowing you to rest more, have a leisurely breakfast and start your day without rushing.

Moreover, thanks to the power of the Powerboat (high-speed RIB boat), you will reach Klein Curaçao in just 45 minutes - much faster than traditional boats, which usually take between 1 hour 30 and 2 hours. Even the return trip is shorter: only 30 minutes.

This means you enjoy more real time on the island, with fewer hours sailing and much less risk of seasickness.

Once in Klein Curaçao, you can relax on its white sandy beaches, snorkel with turtles and explore the island with total freedom.

The tour includes a barbecue lunch with vegetarian option, plus beverages throughout the day: beer, wine, water, soft drinks, seltzers and snorkeling equipment.

With a total duration of 6 hours, it is the ideal option for those who want to live the full Klein Curaçao experience without investing the whole day in the excursion.

Price:

  • $169 per person

  • 135 for children 6 to 12 years old

For a luxury catamaran experience

If you prefer a more exclusive and relaxed experience, an excellent option is to sail to Klein Curacao by catamaran.

Operator Bluefinn Charters offers two iconic catamarans:

  • Black & White

  • Apache

Both include BBQ lunch, non-alcoholic beverages, snorkeling equipment and, starting at 12:30 p.m., Premium open bar (beer, wine, rum and whiskey).

👉 Book here: Trip to Klein Curacao by Catamaran - Black and White

Another highly recommended alternative is the Irie Tours Catamaranknown for its lively atmosphere and excellent service on board.

For an all-inclusive private charter

If you are traveling with a family group, friends or colleagues, you can also rent a private boat from Klein Curacao.
This way you will enjoy the experience with total freedom, without sharing the boat with strangers.

Note that the price may seem high, but this is due to operating costs, which include fuel, personnel on board and maintenance of the ship after each trip.

In exchange, you will enjoy a completely personalized day: you will be able to choose the schedule, the food, the drinks and even the music of the ride.

What can you do at Klein Curacao?

The attraction of Klein Curacao is definitely the beach. It is one of the most beautiful in the world. There you can snorkel, dive and swim.

    1. In Klein Curacao you can also visit the iconic pink Klein Curacao lighthouse, which is located right in the center of the island. The distance from the beach to the lighthouse is not that long and is worth it to learn a little more about the history of the site, as well as Instagram-worthy photos. You can enter the lighthouse, but be careful, as the structures are very old. The government of Curacao started renovating the Klein Curacao lighthouse since 2017, but it is still not completely safe as not all structures are remodeled yet.

    2. In Klein Curacao you will also see ships that have been wrecked due to the northeasterly winds and strong currents that surround the island. One of the most famous was an oil tanker called "Maria Bianca Guidesman", which was wrecked in the 1960s, in the 20th century. It is gradually disappearing, but it is interesting to contemplate the phenomenon. Another recent shipwreck occurred in 2007, to a French yacht called "Tchao". It is known that the people on board were saved, but the wreckage is still there. It is strangely beautiful and they are now an attraction for photographs.

    3. In Klein Curacao you can dive. It is enough to coordinate this activity with the operator of your choice, and that you are certified for diving.

    4. You can practice Kiresurfing. Coordinate with the operator that you will bring your equipment so that they can carry it in a suitable place on the boat.

    5. Snorkeling: All operators will normally offer free use of snorkeling equipment.

    6. Relax: If you are not a water sports lover and simply want a relaxing day, it will also be possible. The beach is sufficiently large and each boat keeps its distance from groups of other boats. So you can lie down and rest when you are not enjoying the crystal clear sea.

How long does it take to get to Klein Curacao?

Except for the Powerboat, which arrives in 45 minutes, almost all boats and catamarans take approximately 1 hour and a half to 1 hour and 45 minutes to arrive.

The return trip is faster as the boat is pushed by the waves. Therefore, the departure time will be approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

How to go to Klein Curacao?

For those who have never been to Curaçao, this is a normal question. Some people have asked in the forums if it is possible to go by car, or on your own. The truth is that, unless you are the coast guard, you can only go for a boat ride.

Can I go on my own to Klein Curacao?

To go on your own you would need to own your own boat and have permission to sail there. Even many boat operators do not have these permits. Therefore, it would be more advisable to go with a tour operator.

Can I bring my own food to Klein Curacao?

All operators allow you to bring your own food or drinks.

Although all excursions to Klein Curacao include a BBQ-style lunch, with drinks, it is understandable that some people will have particular preferences and not everything you might want will be included in this tour.

If you are vegan, allergic to gluten or have a preference for beverages, please consult before booking to avoid disappointment and to enjoy the tour to your heart's content.

Are there restrooms in Klein Curacao?

Although most boats will tell you that they have restrooms on board, it is important to remember that the boats are anchored some distance from the beach and to go to the boat's restroom you will have to swim a bit.

In Klein Curacao there are a couple of makeshift public restrooms that will serve the basic need. However, if you think that you or your companions may need a more adequate bathroom, it is better to book with an operator that has a private bathroom. There are only two with private infrastructure in Klein Curacao: The Mermaid and Miss Ann.

Can I camp or spend the night at Klein Curacao?

Overnight stays in Klein Curacao require special permits and planning between certified operators and coast guard authorities. Due to the logistics involved, it is not a highly promoted activity on the island nor is it often offered by operators. It can be not only costly, but it does not bring profitability to the ship operators, as they may well come again the next morning with a new group.

If you think this would be a plan with a group, contact an operator directly and check the possibilities well in advance.

What should I bring to Klein Curacao?

As in all boat trips, it is essential to bring towels, sun protection, clothes to change, swimsuit, flotation device (if you want), etc.

However, as the vast majority of ships do not have beach houses for shade, it is possible that sunstroke may be an issue to consider before the voyage. Therefore, some additional recommendations:
    - Sun block (minimum SPF 50)
    - Refreshing cream for the skin after the sun.
    - Seasickness pills before boarding.

For any special needs, it is best to take precautions, because ship captains, although they have first aid kits, cannot foresee all situations or health problems that travelers may experience during the voyage.

Can I dive in Klein Curacao?

Most operators will allow you to dive in Klein Curacao. They may even offer oxygen cylinders in the price. However, they will only allow you to do this if you are a certified diver and in some cases they may recommend that you bring your own buddy to do the dive with you.

Check this plan before booking. Or contact me for more recommendations.

Curaçao Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Curaçao Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

        Shelly

Home 9 Author archive for Shelly ( Page 18 )

If you're thinking about traveling to Curaçao, you've probably already seen photos of its turquoise waters, colorful colonial streets, and white-sand beaches. However, what many people discover when they arrive is that Curaçao offers much more than just a beach destination.

This Caribbean island offers a fascinating blend of European, African, Latin American, and Caribbean cultures. Here, you can spend the morning exploring coral reefs, have lunch at a beachfront restaurant, tour a city designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and end the day watching the sunset from a nearly deserted beach.

Unlike other Caribbean destinations where much of the experience revolves around a resort, Curaçao rewards those who venture out to explore. The more you travel around the island, the more you discover.

This guide is designed to answer all the questions that usually come up before traveling: how much it costs, where to stay, which beaches to visit, how to get around, which activities are really worth doing, and what tips can help you make the most of your vacation.

        Where is Curaçao?

Curaçao is located in the southern Caribbean, approximately 65 kilometers off the coast of Venezuela. Together with Aruba and Bonaire, it forms the so-called ABC Islands, three destinations that are very popular among travelers seeking idyllic beaches and a stable climate for much of the year.

The island is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and has a unique identity that combines Dutch, Caribbean, and Latin American influences.

One of Curaçao's biggest draws is its geographic location. Since it lies outside the main hurricane path in the Caribbean, it can be visited practically year-round without the weather-related concerns that affect other destinations in the region.

        Is Curaçao worth visiting?

Definitely yes, but it depends on what you're looking for.

If your idea of a perfect vacation is simply to stay at a resort all week, you'll probably find similar experiences at other Caribbean destinations.

However, if you enjoy discovering different beaches every day, exploring historic cities, snorkeling, sampling local cuisine, and touring an island on your own, Curaçao is one of the most well-rounded destinations in the region.

Many travelers arrive expecting to find a beautiful island and end up being surprised by the variety of experiences it offers. The beaches are usually the main reason for booking the trip, but the cuisine, culture, and relaxed atmosphere are the reasons why so many people return.

        Basic Information You Should Know

        Language

Although the official languages are Papiamento, Dutch, and English, Spanish is widely spoken throughout much of the island.

Many residents have Venezuelan, Colombian, or Dominican roots, and Latin American tourism has grown tremendously in recent years. This makes Spanish-speaking visitors feel very comfortable from the very first day.

        Currency

The official currency is the Caribbean florin (XCG).

However, the U.S. dollar is accepted virtually everywhere. Hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, tours, and stores usually display prices in both florins and dollars.

Credit and debit cards are also widely accepted.

        Drinking water

One of the most pleasant surprises for many visitors is that the tap water in Curaçao is completely safe to drink.

In fact, the island has one of the most advanced desalination plants in the region, and the water is usually of excellent quality.

You don't need to buy bottled water for cooking or brushing your teeth.

        Electricity

Curaçao mainly uses Type A and B plugs, similar to those in the United States.

The electrical current is 127 volts.

If you're traveling from Europe or certain countries in Latin America, you may need to use an adapter.

Do I need a visa to travel to Curaçao?

The requirements depend on your nationality.

Most Latin American travelers may enter as tourists as long as they present:

        • Valid passport.
        • Accommodation trial.
        • Ticket to leave the island.
        • Sufficient funds for the stay.

It is advisable to always check the official requirements before traveling, as immigration regulations may change.

When is the best time to travel to Curaçao?

One of the biggest advantages of Curaçao is that you can visit it year-round.

Temperatures typically range from 27 to 31 degrees Celsius, and the seawater remains warm year-round.

        From December to April

        It's the most popular season.

You'll find sunny days, little rain, and excellent conditions for water activities.

It is also the time of year with the highest hotel occupancy rates and the highest prices.

        From May to August

Many frequent travelers believe that these months offer the best balance between weather and prices.

The beaches tend to be less crowded, and the conditions remain excellent.

        From September to November

That's when you can usually find some of the best deals on flights and hotels.

Rain may be a little more frequent, but it's usually brief and doesn't significantly affect your vacation.

How many days do I need to explore Curaçao?

Although it is possible to visit the island in just a few days, the experience varies considerably depending on how much time you have.

        Curaçao in 3 Days

If you have a long weekend, you can explore Willemstad, visit some beaches, and go on a memorable excursion.

        Curaçao in 5 Days

It's the perfect length of time to combine the beach, culture, and activities.

You'll have time to explore the west coast, visit Klein Curaçao, and enjoy the local cuisine.

        Curaçao in 7 Days

The ideal choice for most travelers.

It allows you to explore the island at your own pace and devote time to both adventure and relaxation.

        Is Curaçao an expensive destination?

Compared to many Latin American destinations, yes.

Compared to other tourist destinations in the Caribbean, not necessarily.

        The biggest expenses are usually:

        • Accommodations.
        • Car rental.
        • Restaurants.
        • Field Trips.

However, there are options for different budgets.

People who book vacation apartments with kitchens tend to significantly reduce their daily expenses.

It's also possible to combine tourist restaurants with small local eateries where you can eat very well for less money.

Do I need to rent a car?

This is probably the most important recommendation in the entire guide.

Although you can technically visit Curaçao using taxis and public transportation, renting a car completely transforms the experience.

Many of the best beaches are spread out, and some of the island's most spectacular areas would be difficult to visit without a car.

In addition, the cumulative cost of several taxi rides can quickly exceed the price of a rental car.

If you want to explore the island beyond your hotel, renting a car is usually one of the best decisions you can make.

        Where to Stay in Curaçao?

Is it safe to travel to Curaçao?

Curaçao is considered one of the safest destinations in the Caribbean.

Most visitors enjoy a completely relaxing vacation.

As with any tourist destination, it's important to take some basic precautions:

        • Do not leave any items in plain sight inside the car.
        • Keep an eye on your belongings at crowded beaches.
        • Use reliable transportation at night.

Beyond these standard recommendations, the island tends to convey a sense of tranquility that many visitors highlight during their stay.

KNOW THE TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS AND COVID 19 MEASURES IN FORCE IN CURAÇAO

As of June 5, 2022: There are no Covid-19 related measures for inbound travelers and the PLC form is not required.

As of March 10, 2022: It is not necessary to submit a COVID-19 test to enter Curaçao.

All foreigners who want to enter Curaçao, will only need to fill out the following form:
        - DiCard (Digital Immigration Card) Click here

        USE OF MASKS

        • The use of face masks is only mandatory in places where health services are provided: pharmacies, hospitals, medical centers, etc.
        • At the airport, passengers must wear face masks according to the guidelines indicated in each space.
        • In establishments where the 2-meter distance is not possible, you may be required to wear a face mask (e.g., in banks, utility offices, etc.). In this sense, each establishment is autonomous in requiring or not the use of face masks. My advice is to always carry a couple of clean face masks in your bag, in case it is required where you have to go during the day.

        DURING THE STAY

        • If while in Curaçao, you or your travel companions have symptoms of COVID-19 (dry cough, fever, tiredness, sore throat, headache, loss of taste or smell) it is your duty to contact the health authority (GGD) by calling 9345 for biosecurity protocol (testing, isolation, etc).
        • In all public spaces on the island you will generally be well seen if you keep a distance of 2 meters from other people. (When waiting in line to pay, walking through the supermarket, etc.)
        • If a traveler tests positive for COVID-19 during his/her stay in Curaçao, he/she will be placed in isolation immediately. This is at your own expense. It is therefore advisable to have travel insurance.

PCR, ANTIGEN, VACCINATION TESTS, VACCINATION CERTIFICATES and vaccination certificates

As of March 10, 2022, it is NOT necessary to present a negative COVID test to enter the island.

If you need to take a COVID test to return to your country, you can take the test at the following locations:

Determining which are the best beaches in Curaçao is not an easy task. Curaçao has more than 35 beaches, all of them with crystal clear blue water and white sand. Many of them are known worldwide, such as Grote Knip Beach that you can see on postcards or typical images of Curaçao, to the more hidden ones that are still very beautiful. Here is a list of what are considered by locals and tourists as the best beaches in Curaçao, either for the beauty of the sea, for the amenities and infrastructure they offer, or simply for the unspoiled nature that surrounds them.

I have also added the location of each beach on the map, so you have an idea of where it is and how to get there.
