THE BEST PLACES TO DIVE IN CURAÇAO

Curaçao is a must-see destination for divers, snorkelers and marine life lovers. This is because there are approximately 65 locations in Curaçao. Divers can explore incredible underwater worlds which I will summarize below:

top producer

The Superior Producer is the most popular shipwreck in the entire Dutch Caribbean. The Superior Producer sank in 1977 at the entrance to the port of Otrabanda. The ship was originally headed for Margarita Island. As it left the port, part of the cargo began to shift due to rough seas. The ship listed, and despite their best efforts to stop the cargo from falling, it sank to a depth of about 30 meters. Realizing there was no way to prevent the sinking, efforts focused on towing it to a safer location away from the shipping lanes. This 30-meter (165-foot) shipwreck is covered in corals and sponges, as well as numerous colonies and species of gorgonians. No wreck diving experience is required to dive at this site. The closest point to the surface is 18 meters deep. Important: You can only dive here when there are no cruise ships docked. You’ll need to check with the dive shop or the Curacao Ports Authority website.

watamula

Watamula comes from the Dutch word "watermolen" which means water mill. Therefore, this place is characterized by containing many streams that can flow in the form of a circle. It is located on the west side of Curaçao and is only accessible by boat. On both sides of this beautiful hard coral reef are two sandy areas filled with large soft corals. The huge hard coral reef starts at 5 m and gradually descends to 20 m, where it becomes a sandy bottom. It is very common to see giant sponges, triggerfish, as well as chub, moray eels, turtles, porcupine fish and eagle rays.

KALKI BEACH

(Alice's Adventures in Wonderland)

One of the most beautiful dive sites in Curaçao, Kalki Beach, also called Alice in Wonderland, is a perfect place to spend a day at the beach with divers, snorkelers and sun lovers. The name "Kalki" refers to the limestone of the surrounding cliffs. The swell is usually calm and with little current, although sometimes the current can be strong and unpredictable. Green moray eels, lobsters and mushroom-shaped coral formations can be seen, as well as a wide range of colorful reef fish.

MUSHROOM FOREST

(Mushroom Forest)
Often voted the number one dive site in Curaçao, the Mushroom Forest gets its name from the mushroom-shaped hard coral formations that are home to a wealth of marine life. The bases of the coral heads have been eroded by natural forces, forming narrow columns that resemble mushrooms and serve as perfect hiding places for small marine reef creatures.

TUGBOAT

Located at a depth of only 5 meters, this popular destination for divers and snorkelers was literally named after the tugboat that accidentally sank some thirty years ago. It is currently covered with coral tube sponges and is home to fascinating blue parrotfish and yellowtail snappers.

BLUE ROOM

In the Blue Room Cave, something magical happens between the sun and the water, transforming the underwater cave into a blue room. It is a special natural phenomenon.

The cave is a blue illuminated cave in Curaçao. You can dive or snorkel in the cave in an almost surreal blue environment. It is uniquely illuminated because sunlight can reach the interior of the cave only through the underwater entrance, as it passes through the clear blue water on its way up.

What is the best tour to go to Klein Curacao?

Tours in Curaçao

Home 9 Category: Tours in Curaçao ( Page 4 )

With which boat should you go to Klein Curacao?

The only way to get to Klein Curacao is by boat. From the main island of Curacao you will find several tour operators offering daily excursions to this small paradise of white sand and turquoise waters.

Most excursions last between 7 and 8 hours in total, as the sailing trip takes approximately 1 hour and 30 to 45 minutes each way.

All the operators who run this tour are licensed, completely safe and reliable. The difference is in what kind of experience you are looking for: comfort, adventure, luxury or speed.

Before booking, be sure to clarify some important points:

  • Are breakfast and lunch included?

  • Does the ship have a bathroom on board?

  • Do you offer drinks during the trip?

  • Are you allowed to bring your own food?

  • Do you have options for people with allergies or special diets?

  • Do you include snorkeling or diving equipment?

  • Is the boat stable in case of swell?

With this in mind, you will be able to choose the perfect tour for you. Here are my recommendations according to your needs:

For an all-inclusive experience with maximum comfort: Mermaid

If you want a complete and carefree experience, my personal recommendation is the all-inclusive Mermaid Boattrips tour.

This operator has its own infrastructure in Klein Curacao, with a shaded area, beach chairs, dining room, buffet, restrooms, showers and even a lookout point ideal for taking spectacular photos.

The Mermaid Boat Trips boat is large and very stable, making it an excellent choice if you get seasick easily. Lunch is plentiful, buffet style, with plenty of provisions for all visitors.

👉 You can book directly via Whatsapp +59995128074 and then pay when boarding.

The best tour to maximize your day: late departure and express arrival in Klein Curaçao: RIB Speedboat

Unlike other tours that leave very early in the morning, this one starts at 09:45 AM from Jan Thiel Beach (Zanzibar Beach & Restaurant), allowing you to rest more, have a leisurely breakfast and start your day without rushing.

Moreover, thanks to the power of the Powerboat (high-speed RIB boat), you will reach Klein Curaçao in just 45 minutes - much faster than traditional boats, which usually take between 1 hour 30 and 2 hours. Even the return trip is shorter: only 30 minutes.

This means you enjoy more real time on the island, with fewer hours sailing and much less risk of seasickness.

Once in Klein Curaçao, you can relax on its white sandy beaches, snorkel with turtles and explore the island with total freedom.

The tour includes a barbecue lunch with vegetarian option, plus beverages throughout the day: beer, wine, water, soft drinks, seltzers and snorkeling equipment.

With a total duration of 6 hours, it is the ideal option for those who want to live the full Klein Curaçao experience without investing the whole day in the excursion.

Price:

  • $169 per person

  • 135 for children 6 to 12 years old

For a luxury catamaran experience

If you prefer a more exclusive and relaxed experience, an excellent option is to sail to Klein Curacao by catamaran.

Operator Bluefinn Charters offers two iconic catamarans:

  • Black & White

  • Apache

Both include BBQ lunch, non-alcoholic beverages, snorkeling equipment and, starting at 12:30 p.m., Premium open bar (beer, wine, rum and whiskey).

👉 Book here: Trip to Klein Curacao by Catamaran - Black and White

Another highly recommended alternative is the Irie Tours Catamaranknown for its lively atmosphere and excellent service on board.

For an all-inclusive private charter

If you are traveling with a family group, friends or colleagues, you can also rent a private boat from Klein Curacao.
This way you will enjoy the experience with total freedom, without sharing the boat with strangers.

Note that the price may seem high, but this is due to operating costs, which include fuel, personnel on board and maintenance of the ship after each trip.

In exchange, you will enjoy a completely personalized day: you will be able to choose the schedule, the food, the drinks and even the music of the ride.

What can you do at Klein Curacao?

The attraction of Klein Curacao is definitely the beach. It is one of the most beautiful in the world. There you can snorkel, dive and swim.

    1. In Klein Curacao you can also visit the iconic pink Klein Curacao lighthouse, which is located right in the center of the island. The distance from the beach to the lighthouse is not that long and is worth it to learn a little more about the history of the site, as well as Instagram-worthy photos. You can enter the lighthouse, but be careful, as the structures are very old. The government of Curacao started renovating the Klein Curacao lighthouse since 2017, but it is still not completely safe as not all structures are remodeled yet.

    2. In Klein Curacao you will also see ships that have been wrecked due to the northeasterly winds and strong currents that surround the island. One of the most famous was an oil tanker called "Maria Bianca Guidesman", which was wrecked in the 1960s, in the 20th century. It is gradually disappearing, but it is interesting to contemplate the phenomenon. Another recent shipwreck occurred in 2007, to a French yacht called "Tchao". It is known that the people on board were saved, but the wreckage is still there. It is strangely beautiful and they are now an attraction for photographs.

    3. In Klein Curacao you can dive. It is enough to coordinate this activity with the operator of your choice, and that you are certified for diving.

    4. You can practice Kiresurfing. Coordinate with the operator that you will bring your equipment so that they can carry it in a suitable place on the boat.

    5. Snorkeling: All operators will normally offer free use of snorkeling equipment.

    6. Relax: If you are not a water sports lover and simply want a relaxing day, it will also be possible. The beach is sufficiently large and each boat keeps its distance from groups of other boats. So you can lie down and rest when you are not enjoying the crystal clear sea.

How long does it take to get to Klein Curacao?

Except for the Powerboat, which arrives in 45 minutes, almost all boats and catamarans take approximately 1 hour and a half to 1 hour and 45 minutes to arrive.

The return trip is faster as the boat is pushed by the waves. Therefore, the departure time will be approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

How to go to Klein Curacao?

For those who have never been to Curaçao, this is a normal question. Some people have asked in the forums if it is possible to go by car, or on your own. The truth is that, unless you are the coast guard, you can only go for a boat ride.

Can I go on my own to Klein Curacao?

To go on your own you would need to own your own boat and have permission to sail there. Even many boat operators do not have these permits. Therefore, it would be more advisable to go with a tour operator.

Can I bring my own food to Klein Curacao?

All operators allow you to bring your own food or drinks.

Although all excursions to Klein Curacao include a BBQ-style lunch, with drinks, it is understandable that some people will have particular preferences and not everything you might want will be included in this tour.

If you are vegan, allergic to gluten or have a preference for beverages, please consult before booking to avoid disappointment and to enjoy the tour to your heart's content.

Are there restrooms in Klein Curacao?

Although most boats will tell you that they have restrooms on board, it is important to remember that the boats are anchored some distance from the beach and to go to the boat's restroom you will have to swim a bit.

In Klein Curacao there are a couple of makeshift public restrooms that will serve the basic need. However, if you think that you or your companions may need a more adequate bathroom, it is better to book with an operator that has a private bathroom. There are only two with private infrastructure in Klein Curacao: The Mermaid and Miss Ann.

Can I camp or spend the night at Klein Curacao?

Overnight stays in Klein Curacao require special permits and planning between certified operators and coast guard authorities. Due to the logistics involved, it is not a highly promoted activity on the island nor is it often offered by operators. It can be not only costly, but it does not bring profitability to the ship operators, as they may well come again the next morning with a new group.

If you think this would be a plan with a group, contact an operator directly and check the possibilities well in advance.

What should I bring to Klein Curacao?

As in all boat trips, it is essential to bring towels, sun protection, clothes to change, swimsuit, flotation device (if you want), etc.

However, as the vast majority of ships do not have beach houses for shade, it is possible that sunstroke may be an issue to consider before the voyage. Therefore, some additional recommendations:
    - Sun block (minimum SPF 50)
    - Refreshing cream for the skin after the sun.
    - Seasickness pills before boarding.

For any special needs, it is best to take precautions, because ship captains, although they have first aid kits, cannot foresee all situations or health problems that travelers may experience during the voyage.

Can I dive in Klein Curacao?

Most operators will allow you to dive in Klein Curacao. They may even offer oxygen cylinders in the price. However, they will only allow you to do this if you are a certified diver and in some cases they may recommend that you bring your own buddy to do the dive with you.

Check this plan before booking. Or contact me for more recommendations.
